Amet Haveli, UDAIPUR

Sunday, 7 April 2013

Whilst living in Mumbai, we made sure that we travelled as much as possible.  I pretty much love everything about India but there is something breathtakingly beautiful about the state of Rajasthan.  As always we were on a bit of a budget and this hotel in Udaipur really stood out as being particularly good value for money.  If anybody ever asks where to stay or even just eat in Udaipur, I immediately send them in the direction of Amet Haveli.

WHERE: Amet Haveli, Udaipur, Rajasthan
WHY: If you can't afford to stay in the world renowned Lake Palace Hotel then why not settle for the next best thing and stay in a charming hotel with a breathtaking view of it?  The Amet Haveli sits right on the waters edge with its gleaming white stone mirroring that of the Lake Palace across the water.  This hotel is not a luxury hotel (double rooms from £60 per night) with fairly simple rooms but the architecture and setting is beautiful.  Very well situated, Amet Haveli is just a short walk/ tuk tuk ride away from the hustle and bustle of the more touristy Udaipur on the opposite side of the lake.  When you return after a long day of sightseeing and shopping, the wonderfully serene grounds are the perfect place to relax and there is even a small pool with sun loungers to kick back on.  The hotel restaurant, Ambrai is generally considered one of the better places to eat in Udaipur.
TIP: When booking, see if the balcony room is available as this room has the best views.  If you want to eat at the Ambrai Restaurant, make sure to make a reservation in advance (even if you are staying at the hotel) in order to guarantee a good lake side view.  As in many restaurants, it is best to stick to the Indian dishes as the 'chinese' and 'continental' choices will only disappoint.

Rajasthan demands a lot from your wardrobe- keep cool and classic, avoiding short, tight and transparent out of respect for the local culture and anything too white for dust and dirt reasons.
